Overseas or your backyard?

as

Following our last post ‘5 Reasons why you should definitely have a Pre-Wedding photo shoot’, the next step is to consider if you want to have it here in Singapore, or at an exotic destination.

According to CNA in 2012, some industry players in Singapore have seen a 20 per cent increase in destination pre-wedding photoshoots in just over a year. The most common destinations these days are Taiwan, Korea, Bali, and Australia. And it’s not difficult to see why. We live on a small island, our city landmarks are overdone, and nobody wants to be lovey-dovey in front of the Merlion, full of your own sweat and stares from a million other people.

Honey, should we head abroad too?

Overseas photoshoots are a lot of fun, and the results can be nothing short of breathtaking. Away from home, you may feel less inhibited to indulge yourselves in all sorts of crazy or utterly mushy poses. Besides, there’s a lot less distraction from your daily routine or phone calls from the office and you can really call this the mini- honeymoon before the wedding.

But of course, everything comes with a price (and time).

Engaging a photographer for a pre-wed shoot overseas would cost anything upwards from S$2000.. Add that to your own travelling costs, and depending on your choice of destination you could be spending upwards more than S$10,000. It’s not just about the money too. Depending on your work schedules, you may want to save your precious annual leave for that ultimate honeymoon.

Here’s one tip that could you use if you’re really torn about the question of whether to splurge the time and money or not. Take a look at your overall wedding budget and see if there’s anything that’s really not as important. For example, you may decide that a fun and exotic photoshoot is worth a lot more in memories than a $8000 wedding dress that you really only intend to wear once (we hope). Also, you may realize that you can’t actually go for a honeymoon anytime soon after the wedding, and so the best time would be before. Go through the entire list and you may just find that you could, after all, make your destination photoshoot come true!

But it’s about the journey, not the destination.

That philosophy applies to everything, including your pre-wedding shots. Remember that a photoshoot is about capturing your unique love story, and it really doesn’t matter if you don’t have cherry blossoms falling behind you. You could create a stunning image right in your own neighborhood that brings you memories of your long walks home, and kissing goodbye at the lift lobby.

A shared common interest could also easily turn into a creative photoshoot theme. Take, for example, this couple that we had the joy of shooting for. The groom is racecar driver, and everyone had such an absolute blast capturing their wild love story in a racecar-themed shoot. Or, if you both love soccer, then kick some balls while you’re at your photoshoot!

Another way to capture your story would be none other than a How-I-Met-Your-Mother theme. Did you catch each other’s eyes before you turned sixteen when you really should have been studying? Or did your heart leap while you were being tossed mid-air during your cheerleading days? These photos would bring back memories not just for you, but for your friends and families who had been with you on your journey. Besides, when your kids ask that “how did you meet” question, you can proudly back your words with images.
