Marriage Matters #1 – Children?
Naturally, this would be one of the first things couples should discuss deep into a romantic relationship. It’s important to never assume with something as monumental as having children. There is no right or wrong answer – it’s all a matter of lifestyle or sensitive health reasons.
However, it is vital to ensure that both parties are on the same page. Some say children are the future, while others find them a dreadful nuisance. Find out where your partner stands on the subject and see if it measures up with your stance before going ahead with the wedding. Doing so will prevent serious disagreements and disappointments later in marriage life.

Marriage Matters #2 – Near, Far, Wherever You Are
You might have fairytale-like wedding photography shots, a perfect bridal celebration, and an unforgettable honeymoon. But the big question is, where do the both of you go from there? Specifically, what are the long-term plans, and will it see the both of you physically separated?
If you intend to stay in Singapore to develop your career while your partner spends three years in Madrid to further his education, it could strain your new married life. Or perhaps he aims to start a bakery in Thailand while you take care of your aging parents at home?
Long-distance relationships can be debilitating, especially for newly married couples. It’s the time when you are super excited to build a wonderful life together – and being apart really throws a wrench into the works. Therefore, discuss early, preferably before the wedding, and try to accompany each other as much as possible!

Marriage Matters #3 – House Rules
You should never compromise your freedom when you get married – that should be the number one rule. It is probably a red flag from the get-go if you lose your identity in the wedding process. That’s why some people opt to stay single until they choose the right one!
But when we speak of house rules, they refer to the responsibilities divided between you two. After all, if one party seems to do everything, it speaks a lot about the other.
Remember to sort out the administrative stuff (i.e., homeownership, grocery budgeting, organizing family events, etc.) before the wedding. It will make things less sticky after the ceremony.

It is impossible to list every possible topic that requires discussion before marriage. Each married couple faces a unique set of issues that they can solve with patience, teamwork, and motivation.
The most important thing is maintaining open and constant communication throughout the years. Consider each party a side that holds a bridge (marriage) together.
